Come and Paint with Me!
No Fees, No Membership, Just send me an email and I will send you a map each week of where I will be.
I will be going out every Friday morning at 9 am. I need a commitment to get me out there so here it is.
Why not come and join me? I will go rain or shine since I have a good painting umbrella and have even been known to paint in the passenger seat of my car if it's too windy or cold outside. I will choose sites that have a washroom or one close by and hopefully a picnic table or shelter. One week it will be a rural or wilderness type setting such as Blakeney Park or Morris Island Conservation Area and the next week a local setting such as the Experimental Farm or Hog's Back Park. I live in Kanata so more likely to be in the West end of Ottawa.
We can meet at lunch time, show off our paintings (or not) and eat together then decide to stay longer or go. There is no commitment, come every week, once a month or don't show up just get some good painting locations.
Bring your kids, dogs whatever so long as you can control them.
If you are not sure what to bring let me know and I will send you a list just let me know which media you are painting in.

Here's some of the things I take with me:
For Acrylics: Paints – tubes, Stay Wet Palette, Brushes, Canvas or canvas board,(Keep sizes small, it takes too long to paint a large canvas), Portable Easel, Umbrella, Pencils, Sketchbook, Water Containers and water if not painting near water. Spray Bottle, Paper towels or rags for clean up, Portable chair, Camera or Cell Phone, Bug spray, sunscreen, Jacket, sweater, sun hat, rain jacket depending on the weather. Sturdy shoes or boots and long pants (tick warning). I put everything I can into a backpack so I have the pack, my little chair( it attaches to the pack) , umbrella and tripod to carry. I try to paint close to my car when painting in acrylics.

For Watercolours ( I have a little belly pack that fits all my watercolour supplies so I can walk far from the car if I want to)
Paints – tubes. Or just a loaded palette. Palette, Watercolour block or watercolor paper taped to a board, Easel if wanted (I don't use one for watercolours) Brushes, Pencils, Sketchbook, Water Containers and water if not painting near water. Spray bottle, Paper towels or rags for clean up, Portable chair, Camera, Cell Phone, Bug spray, sunscreen, Jacket, sweater, sun hat, rain jacket depending on the weather. Sturdy shoes or boots and long pants (tick warning).

Oh yes don't for get to pack a lunch.
Let me know if I've missed something here.

I have 29 pen & ink paintings in this show. It's the first time I've shown all my pen and inks in one place.
It's a lovely place to display my work! It's on for almost 2 months so next time you are in Almonte come and see! The library is behind the beer store in Almonte.

I have a couple of paintings at the Herb Garden outside of Almonte as well.

January is Take a Break Month!

I'm sorry to inform you that I have decided not to teach any classes for the month of January due to the Covid situation.
As I have been sick myself it is for the best. I seem to always spend more time in my studio during the winter. I love to be cozy inside painting and listening to music or podcasts when it's cold outside. If there is snow, please let there be snow, I am always inspired. I love the colours and the light that play on the snow. It amazes me how many colours can be seen when you really look at snow. There is a range of colours in the morning and a completely different range of colours in the late afternoon just as the sun is setting. If the sun is not shining the cold we can paint the gloomy clouds when the world looks back and white.
Take care everyone, be well and may we all have a great creative year!

2021 Review

1/10/2022

I just realized that I did not update my blog once during the 2021 year. Even though the pandemic was still raging, I was able to take part in a couple of shows and even taught some private lessons.
I did a zoom lesson for the West Carleton Arts Society in March on [painting tulips with watercolour.
I was invited by the Herb Garden to display my work in their gallery during the summer months which really pleased me.
I participated in and created 3 online shows for the Ottawa Watercolour Society. I was at that time the webmaster for the society.
I had several paintings on display at the Carp Community Health Center with the West Carleton Arts Society Artists.
I took part in the West Carleton Spring Fling Online Show & Sale during the month of April.
In October I had a pop-up store in the St. Laurent Mall which was amazing and the first time I had displayed so many pieces of my work in one place. It was very successful.
At the end of October I took part in the Red Trillium Studio Tour which also went very well. Its always so much fun meeting everyone.
In November I submitted 2 paintings to Zola's Restaurant through the West Carleton Arts Society and will stay there until January 30th 2022.
I also took part in "Art For All" a show the West Carleton Arts Society put on at Meyers Cadillac in thier wonderful show room.
In December, once again I took part in Christmas at Pine Ridge which is an annual Christmas sale at the pottery studio of Lis Allison. She allows a few artists to tag along and set up in her home for the weekend.
Looking back it was an excellent year considering we were in our second year of the pandemic!

Christmas Sale at Pine Ridge Studio! Dec. 12 & 13th. 10 am.- 4pm.
A little different this year, but still your favorite Christmas Sale! I will be there with my paintings, notecards, Christmas cards and decorations. All Pine Ridge pottery will be 50% Off, free Christmas greenery (alright, some Christmas ‘brownery’ as pine cones and grapevine wreaths are, after all, brown). Janice Johnston will be here with her fabulous dill pickles and preserves as well as original art work. All local, we will have just the things you need to complete your Christmas gift-giving! We will, of course, be following all Covid-19 precautions, including only allowing a limited number of shoppers inside at any time. And it might be cold (it will be cold) and you may have to wait in line to get in, so please dress warmly! Hmmm, maybe a self-serve hot chocolate station is called for…
Hope to see you!

I've started teaching Private Lessons in my Studio

9/18/2020

Well we are not yet out of the woods with Covid19 so I can't start any group classes so I've decided to offer private lessons in my studio. Painting is a wonderful therapeutic method of relaxing and calming the mind. When you really get into a painting and get in the "zone" you have no idea of time or the world around you.
You can now enter my home wearing a mask, I will be wearing one too. Then I will lead you upstairs to my studio where you and I will sit facing each other but each at a separate table. We will then be able to remove our masks as we paint together. Anytime we are closer than 6 feet we will put our masks on again. I wish we could have more students at a time but there really isn't enough room for more with social distancing. I am charging $25 an hour for one lesson or $120 for 6 one hour lessons.  If you would rather learn at home check out some of my lessons on YouTube. You can see them here;

and  I have also started an on line schooldYou may have noticed that my website has changed. I changed website hosting companies so have had to rebuild it. It at least has given me a chance for a fresh look. Let me know in the comments how you like it and be sure to let me know if you see errors!
I have been making YouTube videos, in case you are not aware.
You can find them here ; www.youtube.com/channel/UCWyIbmOLNGSnmwVDwbg8sYQ
I have also started an on-line school. In the beginning I will have acrylic classes and later watercolour classes.
I have one free class
and so far only one other class that you need to pay for. But don't worry there's more in the works!
The on-line classes can be found here: https://brenda-beattie-brushstrokes.teachable.com/
Some of my work is available at the Herb Garden. Because of Covid19, the gallery is not open to the public right now, but you can see it, as well as work by other artists here but you have to scroll way... down:
herbgarden.ca/
My work is also at the Carp West Carleton Family Health Team Building but it is currently not open. Hopefully it will open soon.
Wow I hope soon things will get back to normal. In the meantime , painting and drawing can be very therapeutic and what better time for creativity! Be well everyone!
