An organization called The Friends of Carp Hills approached me to help bring awareness to their group and their inspiring vision for the Carp Hills. Their vision, which is to preserve and protect the natural heritage of the Carp Hills for the benefit of nature and the community, is a cause worth supporting. They are the dedicated stewards of the Carp Hills, working in harmony with the City of Ottawa and its residents.
They had heard I did a lot of Plein air painting with a group of artists, so they asked if I would like to be involved. I was born and grew up in Banff National Park, so I have always been aware of the importance of conserving our natural landscape and preserving its ecology. I met with the Friends of the Carp Hills organization and decided to do some plein air outings in their trails and get the West Carleton Artists Society involved. I spoke to the WCAS executive and the director of the Expressions of Art art show, and they were in complete support. I plan to do Plein-air outings with WCAS to one or more of the Carp Hills trails. These outings will be open to everyone.
It was also agreed that an information table would be set up at the Expressions of Art show. Friends of Carp Hills support The Carp Barrens Trail, The Crazy Horse Trail and the Hidden Lake Trail.
Friends of the Carp Hills have added a page to their website highlighting my involvement. You can read it here: come to your senses with art in the Carp Hills.
I plan on organizing a trip to the Crazy Horse Trail in the fall after mosquito season and will try to get a guide to accompany us on part of the trail. We will have to wait until after August 16th to go to the Carp Barrens Trail, as it is closed from May 21 to August 16, to protect the turtles and other reproducing wildlife at that time. Blanding's turtles, snapping turtles, eastern whip-poor-wills, and common nighthawks lay eggs in and around the trail. Read more about this here. Over 300 turtle hatchlings are saved.
I did have a paint out at one of their trails, Hidden Lake Trail in Carp, and if you missed that one, there will be another before the end of the summer. When planning a plein-air outing, I usually look for places with free or reasonably priced parking and some public bathrooms.
Unfortunately, none of the Carp Hills trails have this. Because of this, instead of my usual three or 4-hour periods, we should plan for around 2 hours, considering it a time for sketching and taking pictures rather than serious painting time.
Hopefully, some talented artists will exhibit thier work from these outings at the Expressions of Art show.
Watch for my bulletins for further information.
